After meeting with Jake a second time to re-record his interview on Thursday 23rd November (as the computer didn’t record the entirety of the first one), I have now sat down and began the editing process. If I have learnt anything over the last four years of my course, it’s that listening back to my voice is quite possibly the most cringiest thing in the world.
Listening back to Jake’s interview, he gives me some real good quotes and a real insight as to what his life is like with Kleine-Levin Syndrome. He told me about things from his diagnosis, episodes and their duration, right through to how supportive his family have been. Having a second interview with Jake recorded does put me at an advantage, as I now have two different but strong audio pieces to listen too and I will be able to choose between a variety of quotes.
Jake doesn’t remember much, if anything, from his episodes and when he does come out of one, he tries to catch up with what he missed but carries on with everyday life. His mother, Helen, has recorded him in the past, and one story I find interesting is that whilst in episode, Jake decided to paint a Viking on his bedroom wall.

Understandably, and no offence to Jake’s painting skills, but he opted to paint over the viking when he came out of episode.
When interviewing Jake, something that I noticed is that that he is really upbeat and positive about his condition and he doesn’t let it hold him back. In a way, and I don’t mean for this to come across mean or offensive, but I was hoping Jake would tell me something really dark and moving. Learning about KLS overall has really moved me, but I want to know more.
I have organised a second interview with Mel Gibson, a friend of Jake’s who also has Kleine-Levin Syndrome, to take place next week. I’m hoping their stories will be different and transparent from one another, and will have a real contrast in my documentary overall.
But for now, here is an exclusive snippet of Jake telling me all about that viking he painted on his wall:
