My name is Emily Shepherd, I’m 23 years old and I am in my final year at Bournemouth University studying Multimedia Journalism.

As part of my final year at university, I have to create a Major Multimedia Project (MMP) about a topic of my choice on a multimedia platform. I have decided to make a 7-minute radio documentary and an online multimedia blog about Kleine-Levin Syndrome, hoping to raise awareness and gain an understanding of what it is like to live with the condition and exploring the effects it may have on someone’s life.

Around a year ago, I came across an article about Kleine-Levin Syndrome on the Daily Mail and found it overwhelming what a person can go through. When I began researching this topic a few months ago and discussed it with my peers, I found that no one knew what the condition was, and because it is so rare, I want to raise awareness about KLS by exploring different factors such as day to day life, in hope that more people will become supportive of the condition.

This blog will follow the making of my 7-minute radio documentary about Kleine-Levin Syndrome, a rare and neurological sleeping disorder causing excessive amounts of sleep, altered behaviour and a reduced understanding of the world. ‘Episodes’ can last days, weeks or months and can happen at anytime.

This blog will act as a second platform alongside my documentary, featuring exclusive audio and video clips which may or may not be featured in the documentary. It will follow me in the progression of making the documentary, from researching to organising my first interview and from editing to submitting the final project. I will also talk about the struggles and challenges I have faced over the last 3 months.
